Ex-Offender Information & Assistance
This page is devoted to the needs of prisoners who are scheduled for release or who have been released. The following topics are included:
ALL RELEASED PRISONERS IN THE STATE OF ARKANSAS WHO ARE: 1) Out of Prison, 2) Off Parole, and 3) Off Probation ARE ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER AND VOTE!
TAKE YOUR DISMISSAL PAPERS WITH YOU TO REGISTRATION
. . for further information and/or assistance ,
It's
NEVER TOO EARLY to PREPARE YOURSELF for your release! 1.) Keep a file with ALL of your ADC paperwork and information. As an ex-offenderer, questions about your prison time will crop up from time to time. Good documentation saves a lot of stress and worry. 2.)
Concerning Job Applications: Leave
the question about felony convictions blank on any job
applications, for 2 reasons: A.
It is often simply overlooked by being left blank. B. If they do notice and ask, tell them the Truth. This way you get an opportunity to speak to the person
and try to sell yourself, whereas often by merely checking the
"yes" box, you
may get eliminated before you even get in the door. 3.)
Concerning Your "Official" Records: DO NOT BELIEVE what YOU are TOLD concerning YOUR NCIC RECORD!! A person's name is deleted from their records WHILE he is in the custody of the ADC. Following release, all past, pending charges are re-entered into the system. If you are aware of ANY outstanding warrants, fines, pending or unresolved cases prior to incarceration, IMMEDIATELY notify every county and municipal clerk, in every county where you even just think you might have warrants. Make arrangements with them to satisfy the courts BEFORE you are re-entered in the database. If you don't, you will get stopped for something stupid, only to be thrown back in jail and probably prison, since an arrest is considered a parole violation. If
there is no record of your violation, have the clerk sign a statement to that
effect, since sometimes/often they
are wrong, or the case can't be found, or they just don't tell you,
only to have some charge -- true or false -- show up months,
even years later! REMEMBER:
"The guy with the most paper, WINS!" 4.)
Concerning "Gate Money": You are given $100.00 gate money upon release from the ADC. This sum can be used for "rent" at facilities which offer housing for a stipend (modest fee). 5.) Concerning your Discharge Paper: Put
a copy of your discharge paper in your wallet.
Most thrift shops, Goodwill, Salvation Army will help out w/clothes, etc. when
you can show you have just been released. 6.)
Concerning your Social Life: Stay away from the girls. At least 85% of the men who go back to prison can directly link their involvement with a woman with their re-incarceration.
The
cards and statistics are stacked against you. You have been
living within a system that is designed for you to fail. The
system wants you back. You are a marked man. Believe it!
The system is BIG, you
are small and damaged. ANY Stupid, reactive, hostile, illegal behavior
will make you go back. It also makes the ADC and your parole officer VERY HAPPY. If you are really serious about staying out of prison and beginning a new life, you MUST play the game, in which the object is to NOT draw any undue attention to yourself and NOT make your parole officer happy by your misbehaving. IF YOU WANT TO
STAY OUT OF PRISON: You MUST do everything you are told to
do and that you agreed to do, obey the laws, follow the rules, etc., etc., to
the letter. The
term "free world" is another lie perpetuated on prisoners that will
ultimately lead you back to prison. The Truth is: There are MORE rules,
regulations and restraints on persons living and succeeding on the outside,
especially a parolee. Food for Thought: By now you have figured out that prison is NOT about your rehabilitation or betterment but rather all about $$. The ADC receives up to $30,000.00 per prisoner from the state. They make $$ on every person who is in prison. They LOSE $$ on every person who leaves their fine institution and NEVER comes back: If you
really want to get back at them for your lost years,
livelihood, family and self worth, "get them" where it
hurts; with what they understand , then you
must understand that the issue is:
MONEY!!.
For
every 12 people who stay out of prison after release, the ADC LOSES ONE MILLION DOLLARS!! Approximately 700 people are released a month, from the ADC. If just 12 of them a month stayed out, the ADC would be looking at a 12 MILLION DOLLAR shortfall. Wouldn't take long at that pace, to put them smooth out of business! Think about it . . . THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "LUCK", there's only OPPORTUNITY meeting PREPARATION: YOU make YOUR OWN "BREAKS" for yourself in life by HOW YOU THINK and WHAT YOU DO! GodSpeed!
IMPORTANT: You will greatly increase your success if you are careful to observe the following procedure: Whenever you write these places, be "professional".
1) Put your name & address at the top of the letter: John Doe Current Address City,
State, Zip
2) Next, put the name of the person you are writing to and their address below your name and address: Jane Doe Halfway House City, State, Zip
3)
Next, below, write the date of your letter: 4) The salutation is next: Dear Ms. Doe,
5)
The
body of your letter, in your own words and to the best of your ability, should
contain the following items: A) Your name, parole hearing date and parole date. B) An affirmation or agreement, in your own words, concerning your understanding of the importance of the need for rules. C) Give references, names and addresses of those who would give support to your pending release.
Special
Note: If
you want to mention Living In Truth,
be sure and have written to us first to let us know, so we
can give a reference with some credibility!
TIP: You can "Schmooze", but BE HONEST!
6) Next, below, be sure to include a line Thanking this person for their consideration, then sign it. TIP:
For
a better response, enclose a Self-Addressed Stamped
Envelope!
